Indiana Special Education Laws:  Inclusion Efforts & Options

Are you aware of the legal measures in place to support Indiana educators and parents when it comes to special education?

Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) requirements allow students with disabilities, to the maximum extent appropriate, the chance to learn in a general education setting along with general education students. These requirements cover traditional classroom instruction as well as broader school experiences including lunch, physical education, and extra-curricular activities.

LRE requirements also demand a continuum of services and placement options to address varying levels of disability needs. If an outside learning placement is required by a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP), the school district can apply for “excess cost” funding support from the Indiana Department of Education.  We want to help you understand the rules and regulations.
