Reflections on My Indiana Leadership Forum Experience
Last month, I had the privilege of graduating from the Indiana Leadership Forum (ILF), joining a network of hundreds of Hoosiers committed to leadership, civic engagement, and public service. The experience exceeded my expectations in ways I could not have anticipated when I first applied over a year ago.
When I applied to the program, my goal was simple: strengthen my leadership skills and build meaningful relationships with professionals from different industries and backgrounds across Indiana. I also wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how government, public policy, and civic institutions work together to shape our communities and our state’s future.
Over the course of the program, those goals were met and then some.
One of the most valuable aspects of ILF was the opportunity to engage with leaders from across the political, business, nonprofit, and public sectors. While our professional experiences varied, we shared a common interest in improving Indiana and serving our communities. The discussions were thoughtful, challenging, and often enlightening. They reinforced the idea that meaningful progress is usually built through collaboration, perspective, and a willingness to listen.
The program also provided a behind-the-scenes look at government and policymaking. As an attorney practicing in the areas of government and municipal law, I regularly work with local governments and public officials. ILF gave me a broader appreciation for how decisions are made and how leaders from different sectors can work together to address complex challenges facing our state. That perspective will continue to benefit both my legal practice and my service to clients.
Perhaps most importantly, ILF reminded me that leadership is not tied to a title or position. Effective leaders are those who invest in their communities, build relationships, seek to understand differing viewpoints, and are willing to step forward when opportunities to serve arise. Those lessons will stay with me long after the program concludes.
I am grateful to the Indiana Leadership Forum, the program’s organizers, alumni, and fellow class members for creating such a rewarding experience. I am also thankful to my colleagues at Kroger Gardis & Regas for their encouragement and support throughout the year. KGR has a long tradition of civic involvement and community leadership, and I am honored to continue that tradition. Notably, KGR Partner Ted W. Nolting is also an ILF alumnus.
As I look ahead, I am excited to stay involved with the ILF alumni network and continue applying the lessons learned through the program. Indiana’s future depends on engaged leaders who are willing to serve, collaborate, and invest in their communities. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of that mission. Congratulations to my fellow graduates in the ILF Class of 2026. I look forward to seeing the impact each of you will make in the years ahead.
